iKARERE

Tena koutou katoa

He kororia ki te Atua
He maungarongo ki runga i te whenua
He whakaaro pai ki nga tangata katoa

Welcome to the last IKARERE of the eventful year that has been 2009.

Some years are years of incremental change and others are times of big transitions – in a sense this has been a year of both for Te Ohu Kaimoana and Maori fisheries generally.

Perhaps indicative of all of that is the fact that in this edition of IKARERE, we’re reporting to you on our new Chairman, the knighting of our outgoing Chairman, the milestone of achieving 50 mandated iwi organisations (MIOs), and a Kaimoana Strategy workshop that signalled a strong future direction.

It has been a big year, and it is now Christmas, and the Board,  management and staff of Te Ohu Kaimoana would like to take this opportunity to wish to all those we have worked with and on behalf of this year a peaceful, safe and happy festive season with whanau and friends.

We look forward to working with you all again in 2010 – a year that will no doubt bring both challenges and opportunities for Maori and Maori fisheries.

In the meantime, I hope you find the last IKARERE of 2009 useful.

Ka nui nga mihi mo te Kirihimete me te Tau Hau!

Peter Douglas, Chief Executive (peter.douglas@teohu.maori.nz)

New Chairman for Te Ohu Kaimoana

Te Ohu Kaimoana last month confirmed Ngati Kahungunu’s Ngahiwi Tomoana as its new Chairman. Mr Tomoana took over from Sir Archie Taiaroa, who stood aside at Te Ohu Kaimona’s November Board meeting. Sir Archie will remain on the Board, offering his experience and his support for the new leadership of Mr Tomoana and newly appointed Deputy Chairman, Sonny Tau, who is also the Chairman of Te Runanga-a-Iwi O Ngapuhi. Mr Tomoana said it was a great honour to be appointed Chairman, and acknowledged Sir Archie’s leadership. Mr Tomoana has been on the Te Ohu Kaimoana Board for three years and is Chairman of Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated. He has also been responsible for the annual Maori Fisheries Conference.

Ngati Toa 50th MIO

Ngati Toa became the 50th MIO at the November Board meeting – and in the words of the incoming Chairman, Ngahiwi Tomoana, “… having 50 of the 57 iwi now mandated to receive there share of the settlement was a suitable testament to Sir Archie’s leadership”. The occasion was also an important milestone, not just for Ngati Toa, but for the whole process of allocation and transfer of assets to iwi, which has been a major workstream for Te Ohu Kaimoana over the past five years.

Kaimoana Strategy Workshop

Te Ohu Kaimoana hosted a Kaimoana Strategy Workshop in Wellington late last month, drawing about 50 representatives from 30 different iwi.  The workshop is a first step towards the development of a Kaimoana Strategy for Maori fisheries interests and was well received by the participants. Te Ohu Kaimoana is already looking at opportunities in 2010 to build on the momentum created by the workshop, so we can further develop the thinking, understanding and ideas around what will be an important ‘compass’ going forward. I look forward to bringing more to you on this subject. Papers and presentations from the workshop can be found on the website.

Sir Archie John Te Atawhai Taiaroa KNZM

The investiture of former Te Ohu Kaimoana Chairman Archie Taiaroa as a Knight of the New Zealand Order of Merit in late October was a big day for him and his whanau. The occasion was celebrated at Hato Paora College, Feilding, and the knighthood was bestowed by Governor-General, Sir Anand Satyanand. Sir Archie was formally recognised for his long years of inspirational service to Maori. Among those there to celebrate with Sir Archie and Martha, Lady Taiaroa (who received her own personal tribute) and their whanau, were Paramount Chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Sir Tumu te Heuheu, Sir Taihakurei (Eddie) Durie, Associate Minister of Maori Affairs Hon Georgina te Heuheu, Labour MP and former Te Ohu Kaimoana chairman Hon Shane Jones, and other dignitaries. Hato Paora – rightly proud of the honour being afforded to such a noted old boy – invited Sir Archie to hold his investiture at the school.

Te Ohu Kaimoana’s Annual Report 2009 has been completed and mailed out to all stakeholders and other interested parties, as have two other important documents, the Annual Plan 2009-2010 and the five-year Te Ohu Kaimoana Strategy 2009-2014. These are crucial documents for any organisation, tracking where they have been, how they have performed and where they are going. If you haven’t got copies, I encourage you to find them on our website at www.teohu.maori.nz
