Who's fishing our waters?
  Who's fishing our waters?

Te Ohu Kaimoana has a new chairman – Matiu Rei, who was appointed to the board by the Iwi Electoral College Te Kawai Taumata.

Matiu (Ngati Toa Rangatira, Ngati Whakaue, Ngapuhi, Nga Ruahinerange, Ngati Koata) is the executive director of Te Runanga O Toa Rangatira and has been involved in a wide range of Maori social and economic development activities during his career.

Matiu has led Ngati Toa’s treaty claim since 1986 and remains the chief negotiator for both the historical and current aquaculture claims. He has managed the iwi’s fisheries since 1989 and played a pivotal role in the runanga’s development through directing all of its operations.

While he has had extensive experience in the fisheries sector, Matiu says he’s looking forward to leading Te Ohu Kaimoana and facing the many challenges the organisation has on behalf of all iwi and Maori. Matiu knows many of the people involved in managing their respective iwi, as well as those growing fisheries businesses through Asset Holding Companies, and says it’s important that Te Ohu Kaimoana remains accessible and active in its fisheries management advice to iwi.

Hinerangi Raumati is no stranger to Te Ohu Kaimoana, having served as an alternate director for the late Ta Archie as well as Hon Koro Wetere, Sonny Tau and Fred Cookson since 2007. A chartered accountant, Hinerangi is currently the Chief Financial Officer for Te Wananga o Aotearoa in Te Awamutu, New Zealand’s second largest tertiary education institution with around 35,000 students, 1,000 full-time employees and revenues in excess of $150 million.

Hinerangi is known for her time as the financial accountant at Tainui Corporation and Tainui Development Ltd in Hamilton and later the Chief Financial Officer for Tainui Group Holdings Ltd, which manages the commercial assets of the Waikato-Tainui people. She also serves as a trustee for the Public Trust and as a director and trustee for private companies and trusts.

Some of you may know Jamie Tuuta from his time as a political reporter for Maori Television, but he has many more strings to his bow. Recently appointed to the board of Te Ohu Kaimoana to replace departing directors, Jamie (Ngati Mutunga, Ngati Tama, Te Ati Awa, Taranaki Tuturu) also serves as the Maori Trustee, is a self-employed business consultant, adviser and a company director.

Passionate about investment and innovative businesses, among Jamie’s goals are increasing the capability of, as well as improving the economic and environmental performance in, Aotearoa’s primary industries, especially the Maori fisheries sector. Jamie’s primary sector experience in agribusiness, fishing, Maori development and investment means he brings a lot to the table of Te Ohu Kaimoana. Jamie has developed strong networks across a variety of industries as a result of his consulting and governance background, and understands that New Zealand is dependent on sound relationships with overseas companies to improve the overall economic performance.
