Who's fishing our waters?

Te Ohu Kaimoana recently helped facilitate a meeting between Iwi and commercial stakeholders to discuss some important fisheries matters for the lower North Island.

The one-day hui included discussions on a proposal to subdivide Paua 2 Quota Management Area into six new QMAs; iwi representation on National Rock Lobster Management Group; The Ministry of Fisheries’ treatment of customary information, and proposals on restructuring of industry organisations. Those who attended also discussed developments relating to the Ministerial Inquiry into the fishing industry’s use of foreign charter vessels (see previous issue of iKarere.)

A comprehensive discussion was held on proposals put forward for the Paua 2 QMA and a full report can be found here on our website. The meeting resolved that for the Paua 2 proposal, Te Ohu Kaimoana will develop a paper on the proposal and report to iwi before the end of 2011.

MFish has recently completed a two-year review of the National Rock Lobster Management Group (NRLMG), a multi‐stakeholder forum that is the primary source of advice to the Minister of Fisheries on rock lobster. The group identifies and discusses management issues and takes a lead role in the development of advice to the Minister on TACs and allowances (IPPs), coordination of research planning processes, and has an oversight of rock lobster science working group processes. In the future the NRLMG is likely to become a very influential group on matters concerning rock lobster.

Part of the review recommends the appointment of two iwi representatives, who will have the ability to represent iwi commercial and non‐commercial interests, to the NRLMG executive.

Te Ohu Kaimoana senior policy adviser Tania McPherson lead a discussion on the Ministry of Fisheries attempts to reduce customary allowances.

A full outline of the day’s discussions can be found here. And Presentations and other information is available on our website here:
