Time for Iwi to Weave Together Common Interests
  Breaking news for Aquaculture

BREAKING NEWS: Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley has announced a raft of Supplementary Order Papers (SOPs) that will strengthen the proposed Aquaculture Legislation Amendment Bill (No.3) currently being discussed in Parliament. Importantly, they include mechanisms for effectively delivering the Maori Commercial Aquaculture Settlement to Iwi as well as changes to the processes that consider how to reconcile the competing interests between aquaculture and commercial fishing.

Te Ohu Kaimoana believes the SOPs will provide benefits to Iwi. An analysis of the changes will be provided to Iwi in a special edition of iKarere soon.

Minister's statement can be found here:

Aotearoa Fisheries Limited posts half-year report

Who's fishing our waters?

Aotearoa Fisheries Limited recently reported its six-month results for the 2011 financial year. All of AFL’s divisions, except for the Aquaculture Division, have delivered results ahead of the same time last year. This is despite a subdued domestic market.

Consolidated profit for the six months ending 31 March 2011 was $23.1 million, compared to $17.9 million for the same period a year ago.

The Aquaculture Division, while better than expected, has been affected by an exotic virus that causes mortality of juvenile oysters, and this has impacted on the North Island oyster farms resulting in higher farms costs and less product to sell. The full impact is likely to be felt by all oyster farmers over the 2011 harvesting season.

Strong international demand and whitefish and mussel prices reaching near-record highs, combined with good catches of some fish species and tight management costs contributed to an improved result for Sealord Group for the period. These gains, however, were offset by the increasingly strong New Zealand dollar, reaching above USD$0.87c lately.

AFL expects trading conditions in the second half of this financial year to remain largely unchanged, although the continuing increase in fuel prices and the volatility of the New Zealand dollar will restrain profitability.

  Weaving together common interests

The different fisheries sectors in New Zealand are too often pitted against each other as they argue for priority but iwi can improve their opportunities and gain increased benefit through greater collaboration.
