NGĀ IWI - TRIBES
Which iwi are mandated?
Click here to view the list of iwi that are mandated.
No iwi organisations were able to be mandated until the new Te Ohu Kaimoana was created on 29 November 2004, following the enactment of the Māori Fisheries Act 2004. However, most iwi had already done a lot of work to prepare for the transfer of assets.
Te Ohu Kaimoana plans to allocate and transfer all assets to iwi by 2010.
Mandated iwi organisations can:
- enter into binding agreements for coastline, harbour and freshwater quota
- receive, hold, and acquire income shares in Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (AFL)
- receive and hold others assets (e.g. cash) allocated to that iwi by Te Ohu
- receive distributions from Te Putea Whakatupu and Te Wai Māori Trusts
- participate in appointing a member of the Electoral College
- participate in appointing a committee member for the 11 year review of the allocation model
- participate in the dispute resolution process under the Māori Fisheries Act 2004.
As iwi organisations become mandated, we will list them on this section of the website.
