NGĀ IWI - TRIBES

Which iwi are recognised?

There are 57 iwi or tribal groups recognised in the Māori Fisheries Act 2004. You can view the full list online (See Schedule 3).

Most of these iwi already have a recognised iwi organisation that will receive assets on their behalf (See Schedule 4). Te Ohu can only recognise one iwi organisation for each iwi or tribal group.

Recognised iwi organisations have an important role. Among other things, they can:

  • receive all annual plans, annual reports, annual accounts, and audit and review reports of Te Ohu Kaimoana
  • receive ACE (annual catch entitlement) on 1 April and 1 October every year
  • participate in dispute resolution processes
  • appoint or remove a member or alternate member of the Electoral College.

All recognised iwi organisations need to meet mandating requirements under the Māori Fisheries Act 2004 before they can receive any Māori fisheries assets. Click here to view the ten key steps to becoming a Mandated Iwi Organisation.
