Legislation & policy

Introduction

Advocating on behalf of Māori in the area of fisheries management and the marine environment is a vital part of Te Ohu's work.

Laws, policies, and the administration of the quota management system (QMS) all impact on the value and the potential value of Māori fisheries assets.

The Government is constantly reforming marine and fisheries-related legislation. As a Wellington-based organisation, Te Ohu is able to advocate directly with government agencies, on behalf of Māori.

Iwi, hapū and Te Ohu also need to work with fishing industry groups, environmentalists, and recreationalists to ensure that New Zealand’s fisheries are sustainable and Māori property rights are protected.

In this section of the website, you can access key discussion documents and submissions from Te Ohu on a range of fisheries and marine environment issues.
