Oceans policy
The Oceans policy provides the direction for integrated and consistent management of the oceans within New Zealand's jurisdiction.
The Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission (forerunner to Te Ohu) made extensive submissions on the first stage of the policy in 2000-2002. The goals and principles the Commission advocated for included:
- maintaining the relationship between Māori and Tangaroa
- recognising Māori customary and commercial rights to fisheries and oceans.
The development of an Oceans policy was put on hold last year as the Government formulated its seabed and foreshore policy. The process is expected to commence again in 2005.
