Iwi around the country are busy preparing themselves to take part in the Kawai Taumata process to choose four new directors to serve on Te Ohu Kaimoana.
Te Kawai Taumata is an electoral college whose primary function is to appoint and remove directors of Te Ohu Kai Moana Trustee Limited. It is an important element of the settlement process that ensures each iwi has the opportunity to participate in and influence the appointment of the directors of Te Ohu Kaimoana.
Letters have been sent to the lead members of each Electoral College group asking them to call a meeting of iwi in their group to decide on appointments to Te Kawai Taumata. Each of the 11 Electoral College groups appoints one member and one alternate member to Te Kawai Taumata. One of those Electoral College groups is made up of representative Maori organisations such as Te Waipareira Trust and other urban Maori groups.
In June, Te Ohu Kaimoana staff began briefing electoral groups on the requirements of the appointment process. Each group will appoint its representative for a meeting of Te Kawai Taumata to be held in time for directors to be appointed and take up their roles on 29 November 2006.
Te Kawai Taumata is to make four appointments – three directors whose terms on the fisheries trust expire in November and one appointment to replace a director who resigned last year. The existing directors can be appointed for a further term.
