The asset value of New Zealand's
commercial fish resource, as managed
under the quota management system
(QMS), is estimated at $3.8 billion,
Statistics New Zealand says. The
information derives from the Fish Monetary
Stock Account. From 1996 to 2006, New
Zealand's commercial fish resource is
estimated to have increased in value by 40
percent, from $2.7 billion in 1996 to $3.8
billion in 2006. Although the number of
species managed under the QMS has also
increased over this period, from 32 to 94,
10 species are responsible for the majority
of the total value.
