Fishers will have to limit the areas where they use bottom trawl fishing, following a recent meeting Chile.
Seafood Industry Council spokesperson, Alistair McFarlane, says an agreement was reached not to bottom trawl beyond areas where the practice is already carried out. He says there will be no exploration of new areas while negotiations on a regional fishing agreement are continuing.
The decision was made at the 3rd International Meeting on the Establishment of a South Pacific RFMO held in Renaca, Chile.
The interim measures are to apply from 30 September 2007 until the establishment of a South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation. The measures, however, are voluntary and are not legally binding under international law.
