Ngai Tamanuhiri achieves inshore fisheries agreement

In March this year, Ngai Tamanuhiri reached an agreement over inshore fisheries with neighbouring iwi Ngati Kahungunu and Rongowhakaata allowing the outstanding balance of its Maori fisheries allocation to be transferred.

Ngai Tamanuhiri receive approximately $1.05 million in inshore quota, harbour, freshwater fishstocks and remaining deepwater they had not already received. Deepwater quota, shares in Aotearoa Fisheries Limited and cash to the value of approximately $682,000 was transferred to Ngai Tamanuhiri in February 2006.

The historic agreement with Ngati Kahungunu to the south and Rongowhakaata to the north recognising the iwi's territory to allow for a calculation of inshore fishstocks was the first to occur on mainland Aotearoa. The two Chatham Islands iwi had already received their full entitlement.
