The Government has extended the decision-making period for the Fisheries Amendment Bill until at least the end of November. This is the second time the Government has extended the timeframe for the legislation because of industry concerns. In May it held off passing the Bill for at least three months following a meeting with the Labour Maori MPs.
Te Ohu Kaimoana, along with other industry organisations, called on the Government to withdraw the Bill because the amendment was not required to ensure sustainability. Director Ngahiwi Tomoana said the Fisheries Amendment Bill is similar to the shared fisheries proposals where the Government could reduce the amount of quota available to iwi without sustainability justifications.
