| Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia unveiled a plaque commemorating the opening of AFL's Moana Pacific lobster facility in Awatoto, Napier. From left, AFL executive chairman Robin Hapi, Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott and, far right, Te Ohu Kaimoana chairman Archie Taiaroa. |
The building previously belonged to Hill Country Beef and was bought by Moana Pacific to upgrade its facilities in Hawkes Bay. AFL's executive chairman Robin Hapi said the previous facility at Ahuriri was uneconomic to upgrade and the Awatoto building made better sense.
He said the new building would also help AFL take advantage of new and developing fisheries that are emerging in the region, such as red and king crabs and surf clams.
The unveiling of the plaque at Awatoto followed the opening and blessing of the new Moana Pacific retail store in the Ahuriri shopping complex earlier in the afternoon.
Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott also attended the opening, saying AFL's commitment to the Hawkes Bay region was welcomed.
