The Treaty Tribes Coalition received unanimous support from iwi attending the Maori Fisheries Conference in Napier recently when it recommended that Te Ohu Kaimoana be considered the truly representative national Maori organisation for fisheries and fisheries-related issues.
Harry Mikaere, Deputy Chairman of the Treaty Tribes Coalition, which organised the conference, said that responding to the challenges facing Maori fisheries businesses requires a strong and truly representative national Maori organisation, now and in the future. “By working in close cooperation with iwi, Te Ohu Kaimoana is such a body,” Mr Mikaere said. “We have witnessed over the last few years iwi advancement in the marine environment, and we attribute this to the close understanding and working relationship iwi are building with Te Ohu Kaimoana.”
Te Ohu Kaimoana chairman Archie Taiaroa thanked Treaty Tribes Coalition and said it was important for all iwi that the past debates over allocation were finally put to rest and that Maori could move ahead as one as we manage and utilise our important fisheries resource.
