Gooey what? New fishery set to take-off

The joint venture to harvest Goeducs (pronounced goo-ee-ducks) is soon to start following fisheries development research into the shellfish by a company in which Te Ohu Kaimoana has a stake.

Goeducs are similar to a large tuatua and live underneath the seabed using a large siphon that protrudes through the surface of the seabed to feed. The shellfish are harvested from QMA7 around Te Tau Ihu.

The development of this fishery has taken months and soon the first sales are likely to occur into the New Zealand market. Eventually, it is hoped to turn the shellfish into a sustainable and very profitable export market.
