New scholar chosen for Japan programme

Manihera Forbes

Manihera Forbes (Ngati Hikairo, Tainui, Scottish, Irish and English ancestries) has been chosen as the Global Fisheries Scholar to Japan for 2009. Manihera is a qualified Barrister/Solicitor, holds an LLB from the University of Waikato, is completing a Local Launch Operators certificate, and holds Maori Nautical Studies certificate from Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

He currently works at the Ministry of Fisheries and is in his third year as a Pou Takawaenga – working with Tainui West Coast Marae representatives to assist in local fisheries management by providing assistance on Management Plans and submissions.

Manihera's future aspirations are to be with Maori at the forefront of fisheries development and management on national and international levels. The Global Fisheries Scholarship will provide an insight into these aspects of the industry.

Manihera is a keen waka ama sportsman.

He paddles in waka taua and has also had the opportunity to voyage on the Te Aurere and Hokule-a. Te Ohu Kai Moana wishes Manihera every success during his stay in Japan.
