Te Ohu hopeful of Bluenose reduction

A reduction in the commercial quota for bluenose is on the cards following evidence of declines in the stock.

Te Ohu Kaimoana is working with the various Commercial Stakeholder Organisations for Bluenose to gain unanimous industry agreement to consistent substantive cuts that will look after the fishery and build it back to healthy levels.

The Ministry of Fisheries has released its Initial Position Paper on TAC changes for Bluenose fishstocks, and while this includes options for reductions in take, much of the drive for reducing catches has come from industry.

Declines in commercial Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) suggests that all stock levels are in decline. General manager policy and operations Laws Lawson says Te Ohu Kaimoana is advocating cuts in excess of 25 percent in the commercial take through a combination of a reduction in the TACC and voluntary shelving in ACE.
