Preparing the Allocation Team

Paki Rawiri who is managing the Allocation Team says it is very pleasing to have two new staff members on board (See He Tāngata) to assist with the Iwi Readiness and Allocation work programs. “The fact that both Maru Samuel and Dianne Collier have experience of working with and for iwi organisations was central to their respective appointments”, says Paki.

Te Ohu Kaimoana have been set the challenging task of transferring fisheries settlement assets within five years to the 57 Iwi organisations recognised within the Māori Fisheries Act 2004. Paki Rawiri says “That's one a month for the next five years so we certainly have our work cut out for us.”

Since the enactment of the Māori Fisheries Act 2004, staff and advisors have been working through the legislation with a fine-tooth comb to ensure that Te Ohu is clear on the mandating requirements for iwi under the Act. To date, a set of draft allocation assessment and approval protocols have been developed which have been set for ratification by the Board later this month. A flow-chart outlining the steps required to achieve mandating status and a range of templates to assist iwi are all close to completion.

As soon as these resources have been ratified by the Board, they will be made available to iwi via the Te Ohu website at teohu.maori.nz
