Final Annual Report for the Fisheries Commission
The Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission filed its last annual report to Parliament last month, marking the final act for an organisation that played an important role in the Māori fisheries saga.
The passing of the Māori Fisheries Act 2004 saw the creation of Te Ohu Kai Moana Trustee Limited (Te Ohu Kaimoana) and Aotearoa Fisheries Limited to take up the role of allocating the fisheries settlement assets as determined by the Act. It is AFL's role to manage and grow the commercial assets. With the creation of Te Ohu Kaimoana came the dissolution of the Fisheries Commission.
The final report is historically significant and includes the audited financial statements of the Commission for the period from 1 October 2003 – 28 November 2004. Future reports on the activities of Te Ohu Kaimoana and Aotearoa Fisheries Limited will be furnished directly to iwi organisations, not Parliament.
