The Government and Te Ohu Kaimoana are expected to announce developments on the Māori Commercial Aquaculture Settlement Trust in the next few weeks.
The aquaculture settlement applies to all iwi who are recognised or will be recognised under the Māori Fisheries Act 2004 and who have coastal rohe. It provides for these iwi to receive a share of 20 percent of all water-space rights created in their region's coastal waters.
As a result of a recent overhaul of the way that aquaculture is managed, a new system is being integrated that means aquaculture can occur only in certain areas – Aquaculture Management Areas or AMAs – that are permitted by the district or regional councils with responsibility over particular areas of water.
Te Ohu Kaimoana is in the process of developing an information sheet for iwi about the Trust, as well as upgrading available information on our website related to this issue. To find out more information about Te Ohu Kaimoana's role, click here.
