CEO's Introduction

He Kororia ki te Atua
He maungarongo ki runga i te whenua
He whakaaro pai ki nga tangata katoa

Nga whakaaro ki a ratou kua wheturangitia, me ou ratou whanau i noho ai i raro i te kapua pouri. Nga manaakitanga o te Atua ki runga i a tatou katoa.

As outlined in previous Tai Pari, the Takutai Trust is the name of the new trust responsible for allocation of marine farming waterspace set aside for Maori under the Maori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement Act 2004.

Very soon, Te Ohu Kaimoana will be forwarding to iwi organisations information about the Takutai Trust so that you know what its functions are and the issues that need to be worked through at a national and iwi level.

There is much work to be done to ensure iwi aquaculture organisations receive their share of the settlement as soon as possible after the creation of Aquaculture Management Areas by regional councils. Over the next few months, we will forward information relating to this settlement.

On another note, at the beginning of the 1 October fishing year, six iwi had met requirements under the Maori Fisheries Act 2004 to become mandated iwi organisations (MIOs) and have been apportioned some or all of their share of the Maori commercial fisheries settlement. Congratulations to those iwi. Details are outlined in this edition of Tai Pari.

For iwi organisations that have waited for almost 15 years for assets from the Maori fisheries settlement with the Crown, it is obviously a welcome sight to have assets transferred to iwi.

It is the desire of Te Ohu Kaimoana for these assets to be rolled out in the shortest possible timeframe. Please don't hesitate to contact Te Ohu Kaimoana staff for assistance in meeting the requirements under the Maori Fisheries Act so that we can complete allocation as soon as possible.

Kia ora,
Peter Douglas
Chief Executive
