Te Ohu Kaimoana chairman gives maiden speech to Parliament

Labour list MP and Te Ohu Kaimoana Chairman Shane Jones' maiden speech to Parliament was celebrated by his whanau and friends at Te Ohu Kaimoana in November.

To mark the event, staff at Te Ohu Kaimoana hosted an informal afternoon tea for Shane and his family, who had travelled from Northland.

The occasion signifies the winding down of his five-year tenure as Chairman of the former Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission and Te Ohu Kaimoana and the beginning of his Parliamentary career, Te Ohu Kaimoana chief executive Peter Douglas said.

In his Parliamentary speech, Shane said that he sought counsel from members of the House, and “pestered others, observers who have endured the speeches of their representatives”.

He said, however, that for any maiden speech, the clearest advice was to strive for authenticity. “This of course suggests a time for reflection - a time when a new parliamentarian lays down a touchstone that one returns to from time to time, or is dragged back to by disappointed supporters, cackling opposition members or foraging journalists.”
