What will be the outcome of the review?

The outcome of the review cannot be determined until the reviewer has completed their work.  Ultimately, however, it could result in the Māori Fisheries Act 2004 being amended to give effect to the reviewer’s findings.  At a general meeting held to discuss the review, MIOs/RIOs may resolve to adopt all or some of the findings and all or part of the plans developed by the entities under review.  If 75 percent of the MIOs representing over half of the notional iwi population support such a resolution then these resolutions must be adopted by the entity under review (as long as they are consistent with the Māori Fisheries Act 2004 or any other enactment).  If these resolutions require an amendment or amendments to the Act, then Te Ohu Kaimoana must request the Minister for Primary Industries to promote the necessary amendments.
