fREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

So, what do Maori want?

We agree that there is a need for change – to get better fisheries management systems in place for shared fisheries. But we don’t agree with the Ministry of Fisheries’ description of the problem or that the proposed solutions will make the situation any better.

Maori want to improve fisheries management by in particular completing the rights-based management system for all sectors.

We want to improve systems, technologies and capabilities for all sectors to report, monitor and manage their catch within their allocated share of any fishery.

Ultimately, it is about making New Zealand a leader in first class management of shared fisheries that sets us apart on the world stage.

That vision is underpinned by the following principles:

  • Above all the sustainability of fisheries resources are protected,
  • The integrity of the Fisheries Settlement assets (and indeed commercial fisheries property rights generally) are protected and valued in New Zealand, and
  • Good incentives are needed for sectors to work together to get the best possible fisheries management outcomes

While the development of this system will take some time there are three key goals:

  • Getting first class information,
  • Establishing clearly defined and integrated rights to the Total Allowable Catch, and
  • Building fully representative mandated organisations for all sectors to represent its members.
