Te Ohu Kaimoana has a new chairman – Matiu Rei, who was appointed to the board by the Iwi Electoral College Te Kawai Taumata.

Matiu is the executive director of Te Runanga O Toa Rangatira and has been involved in a wide range of Maori social and economic development activities during his career.

Matiu has led Ngati Toa’s treaty claim since 1986 and remains the chief negotiator for both the historical and current aquaculture claims. He has managed the iwi’s fisheries since 1989 and played a pivotal role in the runanga’s development through directing all of its operations.

While he has had extensive experience in the fisheries sector, Matiu says he’s looking forward to leading Te Ohu Kaimoana and facing the many challenges the organisation has on behalf of all iwi and Maori. Matiu knows many of the people involved in managing their respective iwi, as well as those growing fisheries businesses through Asset Holding Companies, and says it’s important that Te Ohu Kaimoana remains accessible and active in its fisheries management advice to iwi.
