Te Ohu Kaimoana invests in future of New Zealand seabird species

Te Ohu Kaimoana is proud to support efforts by the New Zealand commercial fishing industry to mitigate the effects of fishing on our seabirds.

Our organisation is a sponsor of Southern Seabirds Solutions Trust, an innovative alliance that supports and encourages commercial fishers to adopt fishing practices that reduce the impact on the seabird population.

Nearly one-quarter (85 species) of the world’s seabird species are in New Zealand – more than anywhere else on Earth.  Fishing vessels provide an easy and abundant food resource for seabirds as they follow the catch. But it can also be deadly as seabirds sometimes get caught in fishing gear.

Te Ohu Kaimoana is delighted to sponsor the Trust and invest in the work they do.  We believe the industry and individual fishing companies hold the key to reducing seabird injuries and deaths. Through the Trust, projects are developed and implemented that educate, support and encourage the industry to find ways to limit seabird interactions.

So far, the Trust has established a programme to assist in the development of mitigation measures for use in both commercial and recreational fisheries and in 2010 the Trust established the International Mitigation Mentoring Programme with renowned seabird expert Barry Baker.

Te Ohu Kaimoana looks forward to further supporting the Southern Seabird Solutions Trust and the exciting challenges and new opportunities they will face in 2011.
