Te Wai Māori Trust’s purpose is to advance Māori interests in freshwater fisheries. This includes:
- funding research into Māori interests
in
freshwater fishing
- promoting the protection of freshwater
fisheries habitats
- promoting the establishment of new
freshwater fisheries.
Te Wai Māori will receive its first capital payment of $10 million by 31 October 2009 and a further $10 million by 31 October 2019. Until the first payment is made, Te Ohu will fund the activities of Te Wai Māori Trust up to a maximum of $2-million in total.
The trust is governed by three directors who are appointed by the board of Te Ohu Kaimoana. The current directors are Morrie Love (Chairperson), Archie Taiaroa and Prue Kapua.
