Sealord
Sealord Group Limited’s global net spans seven continents and delivers more than $500 million worth of seafood to people in over 30 countries each year. The company employs around 1,000 people throughout New Zealand and over 400 staff overseas. Established in 1961, Sealord Products Limited was purchased by Māori in 1992 in a 50-50 joint venture arrangement with Brierley Investments Limited. The funds to purchase the shares were from the final settlement between Māori and the Crown over commercial marine and freshwater fisheries. The Māori shareholding was held by the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission until 2004, when Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (now Moana NZ) assumed the shareholding through the allocation of settlement assets. Sealord Group Limited is now jointly owned by Aotearoa Fisheries Limited and Japanese seafood company Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Limited (Nissui).
