On 11 April 2022, the Māori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement Amendment Bill passed into law. These amendments provide an improved process for allocation of aquaculture assets to iwi in instances where the Act previously prevented this. On 31 March one of the lead negotiators for the Māori Fisheries Settlement, Tā Tipene O'Regan, was awarded New Zealander of the Year. On the 29th of March 2022, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries announced the decisions made for the sustainability measures for the fish stocks consulted on as part of the April 2022 sustainability round.
