We are proud of Te Ohu Kaimoana Chief Executive, Dion Tuuta, who was last week appointed as a Te Ao Māori representative to the Department of Conservation’s Options Development Group.

The Department of Conservation are currently undertaking a partial review of their general policies to make sure Treaty of Waitangi responsibilities are properly reflected. As part of the Options Development Group, Tuuta will be part of the roopu responsible for developing recommendations for changes to the general policies before they are open to consultation.

“I’m pleased to be appointed as a representative from Te Ao Māori, and to have the opportunity to make sure Te Tiriti o Waitangi is considered and respected in the early stage development of any future conservation recommendations,” Tuuta says.

Of the 12 appointed members, 8 were nominated by whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori organisations, and 4 were nominated by Conservation Board Chairs. A further 3 officials from DOC will participate as ex members of the Options Development Group.
